Rafael Pereira was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. Inspired by the infectious sounds of street parades and outdoor concerts, he began studying drums and percussion at the age of 12.

Early on, "Rafa" had the opportunity to attend workshops with many great Brazillian percussionists, including Airto Moreira, Nana Vasconcelos, Guelloo and Marcos Suzano. His interest in the traditional styles of samba, choro, and frevo, along with more modern music, like pop and rock made him a favorite percussionists among many performers in Sån Paulo. While still a teenager, Rafa co-founded and directed a local samba group, organizing other percussionists, writing rhythmic compositions and arranging performances.

In 2002, he moved to the U.S. as an exchange student. After graduating high school, he relocated to Atlanta and quickly began to widen his study of world percussion to include the instruments of Cuba, the Middle East and West Africa. He has since performaed with several area artists, includinig Latin jazz and Brazillian style guitarist Sasha Lisnichuk.

In 2004, Rafa co-produced and performaed on Sasha's latest release, "Percussionata Project". Rafa is currently working on a long term research effort to produce a servis od DVD's and books that explore the percussion instruments, musical history and culture of his homeland.
