After graduation from Georgia State University, Barbera lived and performed in Washington, DC and New York City for nearly a decade where she performed with the Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra, National Symphony and Amato Opera Company. Since returning to the Atlanta area in 1985, she has performed with the Columbia, Macon, Knoxville, Greenville, Oak Ridge and Columbus symphonies. During the 1996-97 season, Ms. Schmedes completed a Master of Arts degree at the Florida State University’s acclaimed School of Music. She also served as Principal English Horn with the Augusta Symphony from 1988-2001, coordinator of the Thomas Stacy English Horn Seminar in Carmel, CA from 1995-2000, has written articles for Finermusic.com music education internet site, and was on the music faculties of Agnes Scott, Georgia Tech and Morris Brown. Her first two books entitled, Wind Chamber Music: An Annotated Bibliography, Volumes I & II, were published by Scarecrow Press in 1996 and 2002 respectively. In addition to her position of founding Artistic Director/Oboist with the Pandean Players, Ms. Schmedes is in her third year as Director of Orchestras at Lovinggood Middle School. Barbera shares her hectic life with husband, actor/director/playwright John Schmedes, thirteen year old son Eron, a dog and three cats.
