Music Director's Corner
Classical music is often misunderstood as an art that
is old, dull, and sort of a museum for compositions of
dead composers that have no relevance to modern life.
This is an unfortunate myth. In fact, our next series
of concerts proves that this is not the case. The Cobb
Symphony is intent on not having our audience just
attend concerts, but instead inspiring them to make the
arts an important part of their lives.
First,
we are incredibly excited to premiere Eric Alexander's
new composition. Eric personifies what it is like to be
a successful musician in the 21st Century. He is a
tremendous trombone player for the Georgia Symphony and is
a wonderful composer that has written a piece that will
connect to our audience. Classical music is a living
art and Eric proves this through his enthusiasm,
diversity of skills, and connection that he makes to the
Atlanta community. We are pleased to premiere Eric's
work in the second installment of our concerts that
feature local composers and important works for chamber
orchestra. Like last year, when Rob Cronin wrote a
piece that featured his wife, flute player
extraordinaire Christina Smith, Eric's piece will
feature his wife Nyla singing a set of songs.
What better way to enjoy a night out and hear another
kind of classical music, than to go to The Strand
Theater and take in CSO Jazz! led by Sam Skelton. This
is the best kept secret in the city. Check out some of
the most important American music played by the best
freelance jazz artists in the city. Plus, Sam will
entertain and inform you about the music in important
ways. I feel refreshed, energized, and educated every
time I hear one of his concerts.
Finally, the
Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestras and Chorus will
perform their second concerts of the year. What a
thrill it is to experience these talented students not
just learning about music, but experiencing it. They
are appreciating music and gaining the knowledge that
will allow them to become the next generation of people
that believe in the arts and what it can do to raise the
human condition.
After hearing these concerts,
I would encourage you to think about the state of
classical music. We think it is alive and full of
vibrancy. The trick now is to get the message out!
